Spotsylvania High School Sophomore Takes First Place in World Wakeboard Championship Event.

Oklahoma City , September 7, 2008 : Matt Hayden, a sophomore at Spotsylvania High School, captured the World Amateur Wakeskate Title for 2008. Athletes from around the world qualified to compete in the WWA Wakeboard World Championship event, held in Oklahoma City, September 4-7, 2008.
The WWA Wakeboard World Championships brought together both amateur and professional wakeboarders and wakeskaters, to compete for titles in sixteen different divisions. Athletes came from as far away as Mexico, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Tahiti and Australia, 15 countries total. All athletes rode behind a Supra, the official towboat for the World Championships.
Matt Hayden, age 15, competed in the wakeskate portion of the competition. A wakeskater uses a board similar to a wakeboard but it has no bindings, with the wakeskater only wearing wakeskate shoes or tennis shoes. Wakeskating requires the rider to complete tricks behind the boat without being attached to the board. Wakeskating combines the thrill of wakeboarding, the free riding feel of surfing while adding tricks often performed on skateboards
Matt rides with his family on Lake Anna, about 40 miles northwest of Richmond, Virginia. He rides behind a Supra 24’ Sunsport. Matt uses a Hyperlite Catalyst wakeskate and Reef Byerly wakeskate shoes. He is a sponsored rider through Freestyle Board Shop out of Charlottesville and Lake Anna, and a regional rider for Hyperlite wakeboards.
